Brazil EV surge, E32 blend, and transport reforms

Entities: DFM Vigo · Brazil · União da Indústria de Cana-de-Açúcar e Bioenergia · Taguatinga hydrogen plant · Ministério Público Federal

Overview

Brazil’s mandatory 32 % anhydrous‑ethanol gasoline blend (E32) took effect on 1 Aug 2026, targeting a cut of about 900 million L of gasoline imports and a boost of roughly 411 million L of renewable‑fuel demand. On 22 July the Federal Public Ministry filed a civil action in Minas Gerais seeking an injunction against the blend, arguing the CNPE relied on studies for the earlier E30 mix and omitted specific assessments of vehicle durability, emissions and corrosion risk. The case now sits before the Supreme Court, where the MPF reiterates concerns that E32 could harm older, imported or motorcycle fleets and lack adequate environmental validation.

In the electric‑vehicle sector, BYD’s Camaçari plant in Bahia celebrated its 100,000th vehicle in July 2026, a Dolphin Mini that helped the brand lead Brazil’s EV sales for five straight months. The facility employs roughly 5,500 workers (86 % local), is backed by a R$ 5.5 bn investment, and aims for up to 600 000 cars annually, with export orders of 50 000 units each to Argentina and Mexico. BYD moved to fourth place in national sales with 99 075 units.

Chinese automaker GWM launched Brazil’s first commercial hydrogen‑fuel‑cell truck, projecting R$ 20 million in sales for 2026 and R$ 200 million for 2027, and is offering retrofit kits for diesel trucks. Neoenergia, partnering with Higer Bus, put the country’s first green‑hydrogen bus into service in Brasília, demonstrating a renewable refuelling chain.

Meanwhile, Chery entered the market with the Omoda E5 electric SUV and the Jaecoo J7 plug‑in hybrid, while cutting the Tiggo 7 PHEV price by R$10 000, expanding Brazil’s affordable EV and hybrid options.
