Indigenous violence in Brazil rises to 258 murders in 2025 FAST-MOVING
A report by the Missionary Indigenous Council (Cimi) reveals a significant rise in violence against indigenous peoples in Brazil during 2025. The data shows 258 indigenous people were murdered, an increase from the 211 cases recorded in 2024.
Violence is most concentrated in the states of Roraima (82 deaths), Amazonas (47 deaths), and Mato Grosso do Sul (37 deaths). The report identifies three primary categories of violence: attacks against individuals, attacks against property, and violence resulting from state omission.
Territorial disputes are a major driver of this insecurity. Many attacks occurred in areas that are officially delimited but have faced delayed demarcation processes for over a decade. Legal instability surrounding Law 14.701, known as the 'Marco Temporal' law, is cited as a factor exacerbating these conflicts.
Additionally, the report highlights humanitarian crises including increased suicide rates, child mortality, and the devastating impact of illegal mining, specifically in the TI Sararé territory in Mato Grosso. Indigenous leaders also report threats from agribusiness expansion and the illegal leasing of traditional territories.
