Brazil indigenous murders rise to 258 in 2025, Cimi report
A report by the Missionary Indigenous Council (Cimi) reveals a significant rise in violence against indigenous peoples in Brazil during 2025. The number of indigenous murders rose to 258, a 22% increase from the 211 cases recorded in 2024. The states of Roraima (82 murders), Amazonas (47), and Mato Grosso do Sul (37) reported the highest numbers of homicides.
Beyond direct killings, the report highlights increases in sexual violence, suicide rates, and child mortality. Indigenous child mortality reached 1,024 deaths, with 57% attributed to preventable causes such as pneumonia and malnutrition. Suicides also saw a 3.3% increase, primarily affecting those aged 20 to 29.
Cimi attributes the escalation of violence to territorial disputes, illegal land invasions, and the legal impasse surrounding Law 14.701 (the Marco Temporal law). The report notes that even in territories already delimited by the state, invaders continue to operate due to prolonged judicial delays and state omission.
