Brazil intensifies talks with US to avert new tariffs
The Brazilian government, under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has stepped up negotiations with the United States to avoid the imposition of additional duties on its exports. Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services Márcio Fernando Elias Rosa said the dialogue, now in its fourth high‑level virtual meeting with the U.S. Trade Representative’s office, focuses on six areas: digital commerce, preferential tariff reductions, anti‑corruption measures, intellectual‑property protection, ethanol trade and illegal deforestation.
Brazil submitted its formal defense to the USTR’s investigation that alleges unfair trade practices, including the use of the Pix instant‑payment system. The talks aim to prepare a senior‑level summit before 15 July, building on previous meetings in May and June, and to keep open the possibility of extending support programs for Brazilian firms should tariffs be confirmed.
