Brazil investigates political intimidation of students and teachers

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) is investigating reports of intimidation and threats against students and professors at public educational institutions in Brazil. The investigation, prompted by complaints from the National Union of Higher Education Teachers (Andes-SN), aims to determine how institutions are ensuring freedom of expression and the safety of the academic community during the electoral period.

In Rio de Janeiro, reports include threats against students at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and the Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ) via messaging groups. Additionally, an incident was noted at Cefet/RJ in Angra dos Reis, where a man allegedly threatened students during a pro-democracy mobilization. In Rio Grande do Sul, the MPF is looking into the circulation of intimidating materials targeting students at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).

In a separate incident in Marabá, teacher Heidiany Moreno reported political violence to the Civil Police after two students forcibly removed a political sticker from her vehicle. Moreno stated the report is intended to encourage societal reflection on political hostility. Legal experts noted that such polarization has led to increased physical and verbal aggression in the region.
