Political intimidation of Brazilian academic communities

Overview

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) launched an investigation into reports of intimidation and threats directed at students and professors within Brazil’s public educational institutions. These investigations, prompted by complaints from the National Union of Higher Education Teachers (Andes-SN), focus on ensuring academic freedom and safety during the electoral period.

Specific incidents reported include threats against students at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and the Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ) via messaging groups, as well as intimidation at Cefet/RJ in Angra dos Reis. In Rio Grande do Sul, authorities are examining the circulation of intimidating materials at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Additionally, reports of political violence have emerged, such as an incident in Marabá where a teacher reported students for forcibly removing a political sticker from her vehicle.

In response to these developments, the National Union of Students (UNE) and the Geração 68 movement have mobilized to defend democratic freedoms. The Geração 68 movement issued a manifesto repudiating attempts to intimidate students and workers, drawing historical parallels to the military dictatorship era. UNE President Bianca Borges stated that recent political developments have mobilized a generation that views democracy as being at risk, emphasizing the need for resistance to protect university funding, social rights, and science and technology.
