Brazil-Japan World Cup match prompts altered store hours and restaurant surge

Ahead of the Brazil‑Japan round‑of‑16 match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, retailers in Recife’s city centre and its malls will adjust opening times on Monday, June 29. Most downtown stores are expected to close at 13:00 and remain closed for the remainder of the day, while shopping centres will shut 30 minutes before kickoff and reopen 30 minutes after the final whistle. State services will also close at midday, keeping only essential functions open.

The 14:00 kickoff coincides with lunchtime, driving restaurants and bars nationwide to prepare for a surge in customers. According to the Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants (Abrasel), 80 % of its members expect higher sales on match days, with 59 % projecting revenue growth of up to 20 %. “The 14 h slot is ideal because it combines the natural lunch flow with the excitement of the game,” said Abrasel content leader José Eduardo Camargo. Establishments are adding staff, tweaking menus for quicker service and expanding delivery capacity to meet the anticipated demand.
