Brazil Supreme Court justice suspends Flávio Bolsonaro's visits to father Jair Bolsonaro for 90 days

On 13 July 2026 Justice Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court ordered a 90‑day suspension of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro's visits to his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27‑year house‑arrest sentence.

The decision followed a live‑stream in which Flávio read a handwritten letter in which Jair endorsed his son's pre‑candidacy for the 2026 presidential election. Moraes said the act used the visitation right for political promotion and violated a court order forbidding Jair from using social media, directly or via third parties. He also gave Jair’s defence 48 hours to explain whether the former president knew the letter would be posted and referred the case to the Electoral Prosecutor’s Office for possible early‑campaign violation.

Flávio’s legal team called the measure “illegal and unconstitutional,” arguing it breaches the Constitution, the Penal Execution Law and the lawyers’ statute, and announced an appeal. Several political figures—including pre‑candidates Renan Santos and Eduardo Bolsonaro and former judge Sergio Moro—criticised the ruling as partisan and disproportionate.
