Brazil Justice Ministry launches national database to combat organized crime

The Ministry of Justice and Public Safety (MJSP) is drafting a regulation to create the National Database of Ultra‑Violent Criminal Organizations, Paramilitary Groups and Private Militias. A Technical Working Group comprising federal police, intelligence agencies, the National Council of Public Security, the Central Bank, the Federal Revenue Service and academic experts will define rules for data governance, interoperability, security and audit. Coordinated by the Secretariat of Public Security, the system will integrate information on members, financiers, operational links and territorial presence of criminal groups to strengthen investigations, intelligence production and policy making.

In parallel, MJSP has begun implementing the "Padrão Segurança Máxima" (Maximum‑Security Standard) at the Campo Grande high‑security prison in Mato Grosso do Sul, one of 138 strategic facilities in the Brazil Against Organized Crime program. The project, run with the National Penal Force and Federal Penal Police, brings training, new protocols and equipment such as X‑ray scanners, body‑scan devices and specialized vehicles to improve inmate control, staff safety and the overall fight against organized crime within the penitentiary system.
