Brazil labor law changes impact hospitality and condominium sectors
The end of the 6x1 work schedule in Brazil, set to take effect on December 16, is forcing significant operational adjustments in the hospitality and condominium management sectors.
In the condominium sector, administrators and managers are evaluating ways to ensure two days of rest for the country's 553,000 porters, janitors, and cleaning professionals. For 24-hour concierge services, transitioning from the current model may require hiring additional staff. Experts from Secovi-SP suggest that such changes could increase payroll expenses—which already account for 50% to 65% of condominium costs—potentially leading to a 10% to 15% increase in monthly fees.
The hotel industry faces similar challenges due to its 24/7 nature and heavy reliance on human labor for reception, housekeeping, and maintenance. While large hotel groups may have the financial flexibility and staff volume to reorganize shifts, small and medium-sized establishments face tighter margins and potential labor shortages. Because technology cannot fully replace human interaction in hospitality, increased labor costs are expected to be passed on to consumers through higher room rates.
