Brazil labor market study reveals glass ceiling for women and Black professionals
A study analyzing the Brazilian labor market has identified a ‘glass ceiling’ effect affecting women and Black individuals in managerial and directorial roles. Using data from the 2019 and 2022 Brazilian Household Sample Survey, researchers examined wage differentials across different earnings quintiles.
The findings indicate that the glass ceiling for women is more pronounced in the public sector than in the private sector. Additionally, a glass ceiling effect was identified for Black people, with evidence suggesting even greater marginalization for Black women.
The research also highlights the impact of domestic responsibilities, noting that caring for individuals over 60 years old has a significant negative impact on the earnings of women in lower income groups. The study suggests that public policies are necessary to increase representation and promote equitable compensation in high-level positions.
