Gender and racial inequality in Brazil labor market

Research into the Brazilian labor market highlights persistent inequalities regarding gender and race, alongside evolving trends in female leadership.

Initial studies identified a ‘glass ceiling’ effect that limits the advancement of women and Black professionals into managerial and directorial roles. This phenomenon was found to be more pronounced for women in the public sector than in the private sector, with Black women experiencing even greater marginalization. Additionally, domestic responsibilities, such as caring for elderly relatives, were noted to negatively impact the earnings of women in lower income groups.

Subsequent data indicates a rise in female leadership, with Brazil reaching a 32.2% female leadership rate, surpassing several European countries. This progress is driven by a generational shift, as representation increases from 27.4% among Baby Boomers to 48% among Generation Z. However, significant wage disparities remain; women earn an average of 78.8% of what men earn. Despite the enactment of Law No. 14,611 in July 2023, which mandates salary equality and transparency reports for larger companies, economic gaps persist.
