Brazilian cities begin rollout of 20‑valent pneumococcal vaccine for children

On June 15, municipal health authorities in João Pessoa and Chapadão do Sul administered the first doses of the 20‑valent pneumococcal vaccine (Pneumo 20) through Brazil’s public health system (SUS). The new immuniser expands coverage against Streptococcus pneumoniae, protecting against pneumonia, meningitis, otitis and sinusitis.

The national vaccination schedule now includes Pneumo 20 at two months of age, with a booster at twelve months; the 10‑valent vaccine remains in use at four months during the transition. The vaccine is also available to children with incomplete schedules and to high‑risk groups such as premature infants, immunocompromised patients and those with chronic diseases.

Fernando Virgolino, head of João Pessoa’s Immunization Section, said, “The incorporation of Pneumococcal 20 into SUS represents a significant advance for public health. We are expanding protection against a larger number of pneumococcal serotypes and strengthening prevention of diseases that can cause hospitalisations, sequelae and even deaths.”
