Brazil and Argentina launch electronic cattle traceability system on July 1

An electronic traceability system for cattle will become mandatory on 1 July in Brazil and Argentina. The platform records each animal from birth through its journey to the slaughterhouse, with the first phase adding data capture at frigoríficos. The rollout follows a governmental push to meet international market requirements, particularly the European Union’s demand for proof that exported beef has never received antimicrobials. A new certification protocol for “antibiotic‑free” beef will be required from 3 September; however, certification of properties is still pending. Industry experts say that detailed animal‑by‑animal traceability is essential for maintaining access to high‑value export markets and for safeguarding the reputation of Brazil’s and Argentina’s beef sectors.

The system is expected to improve data on animal genetics, production practices and meat quality, helping producers make more informed decisions while also presenting adaptation challenges for smaller farms.
