Brazil launches digital National Identity Card (CIN) to replace RG

Brazil has introduced the Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN), a new national identity document that replaces the state‑issued RG. The CIN uses the citizen’s CPF as a single, unique identifier, standardising identity records across the country and aiming to reduce fraud.

The card can be requested online via a smartphone, with appointment scheduling and biometric data collection at a local identification office. In several states, such as São Paulo and Minas Gerais, the physical card is mailed to the applicant’s home. The first issuance and renewals are free, while second‑issue fees may apply. A digital version of the CIN is available through the Gov.br app once the physical card is issued.

Alongside the CIN, Brazil now offers other key documents – work card, driver’s licence, health card and voter title – in digital form, all accessible via official apps.
