Brazil launches digital toll tracking for free flow system
The Brazilian Ministry of Transport, Serpro, and the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran) have launched a new integrated system to manage 'free flow' electronic tolls. This technology allows vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping or slowing down, using cameras and sensors to identify license plates or electronic tags.
Drivers can now use the CNH do Brasil mobile application to consult their passage history, check due amounts, and identify the responsible concessionaire. While the app provides the necessary information and a 'How to pay' button, it does not process payments directly; instead, it redirects users to the official payment channels of the specific road concessionaire. Currently, 14 concessionaires are integrated into the system.
To prevent fraud, authorities warn drivers to use only official channels, noting that cybersecurity firms have identified hundreds of fraudulent websites mimicking toll payment portals. Regarding penalties, failure to pay within the 30-day deadline can result in a fine and points on a driver's license, though a transition period is in place to allow for system adaptation.
