Brazil launches national DNA collection campaign for missing persons
Brazil has launched its fourth national DNA collection mobilization to assist in identifying missing persons. The campaign, coordinated by the federal government in partnership with state public security secretariats, runs from August 24 to August 28.
Across the 27 federative units, 334 collection points have been established to receive genetic material from relatives. The process is free, painless, and primarily targets first-degree relatives, including parents, children, and siblings. The collected DNA is used to create genetic profiles that can be cross-referenced with unidentified living or deceased individuals in state, district, and national databases.
To participate, relatives must present identification and information from the missing person's police report (Boletim de Ocorrência), such as the registration number, state, and the responsible police station. The Ministry of Justice emphasizes that the collected material is used exclusively for locating missing persons and is not shared for criminal research purposes.
