Brazil launches new National Identity Card (CIN) with free issuance drives

The Brazilian government will replace the old Registro Geral (RG) with the new Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN) beginning in 2028, with the transition to be completed by 2032. The CIN uses the CPF as a unique identifier, includes a QR code for validation, and will be issued by state civil police offices. In Roraima, citizens must schedule an appointment online, except for seniors over 60, pregnant or lactating women, and people with disabilities, and must present documents such as CPF, birth or marriage certificate, proof of address and a recent photo. Delivery of the card takes up to 90 days in the state capital.

A separate free, no‑appointment drive is being held in Espírito Santo on two Fridays in August, offering 140 slots for anyone aged 14 or older to obtain the CIN. Applicants must bring the same required documents. The initiative is also being replicated in Paraná, where citizens can receive the new card through scheduled appointments at the state police.
