Brazil launches new National Identity Card (CIN) with QR verification

Brazil has set a 2032 deadline for citizens to replace the older Registro Geral (RG) with the new Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN). The new card unifies identification under a single CPF number, eliminating multiple state‑issued RG numbers. Issuance is now available in all states and the Federal District; the first physical copy is free, with optional polycarbonate versions that may carry a fee. Validity periods vary by age: five years for children under 12, ten years for ages 12‑59, and indefinite for those 60 and older.

A QR code on the back of the CIN allows anyone with the official Gov.br app to verify authenticity and, in a full read, confirm the card’s validity and view registered data. The partial read confirms the issuing ministry and shows basic details such as CPF and birth date, while the full read requires an internet‑connected Gov.br account. The feature is intended to curb fraud by letting users compare digital information with the printed document.

The rollout is part of a federal effort to modernise identification, improve security and streamline citizen services across Brazil.
