Brazil launches pilot issuance of new National Identity Card in Manaus

The Brazilian government began a pilot program in Manaus to issue the new National Identity Card (Carteira de Identidade Nacional, CIN) through 12 local notary offices. The pilot, starting on 13 July, allows cartórios to provide the document for a fee of R$ 165 for the paper version and R$ 307 for a polycarbonate card, while standard state-run stations continue to offer the service for free. Officials hope to evaluate the pilot before extending the model to other cartórios in the capital and eventually to offices throughout the state of Amazonas.

The CIN replaces the traditional state RG and is linked to the citizen’s CPF. Applicants must first schedule an appointment online, then appear in person to provide birth or marriage certificates, a CPF, proof of residence, and any existing ID. The first physical paper version is free nationwide; a polycarbonate card or second copies may incur fees set by each state. A digital version will become available in the Gov.br app after the physical document’s data are uploaded to the national database. The older RG remains valid until February 2032.
