Brazil launches state supercomputer network in Paraná

A new high‑performance computing (HPC) network is being built for the public universities of Paraná. The project, coordinated by the state science agency SETI and the Fundação Araucária, will install eight supercomputers and an AI‑optimized machine across campuses in Londrina, Maringá, Ponta Grossa, the State University of Paraná, Oeste do Paraná, Centro‑Oeste do Paraná, Norte do Paraná and the Instituto de Desenvolvimento Regional. Hi‑Mix, a tech firm in Pato Branco, won the contract and is finalising the assembly line with partners from India’s Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C‑DAC) and VVDN. Technical teams are currently in India to define production details before the line is set up at Hi‑Mix’s facility.

In Rio de Janeiro, a separate AI supercomputer initiative is being pursued in partnership with Nvidia. At the same time, Nvidia has entered negotiations to back a $250 billion loan for OpenAI’s planned U.S. data centre, prompting a roughly 5 % decline in Nvidia shares. Analysts have warned that the structure—where Nvidia would guarantee financing for a project that will buy its own chips—creates circular risk.

The Brazilian HPC rollout aims to boost scientific research and data‑intensive modelling across the state, while the Nvidia‑OpenAI financing plan highlights growing financial scrutiny of large‑scale AI infrastructure worldwide.
