Brazil launches thousands of free Libras courses across multiple states
The Distrito Federal's Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (SECTI-DF), together with Instituto Superar and Ilustrar Mestrias (ISIM), opened registration for the Librando Tech project, providing 1,500 free online courses in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) from 10 August 2026 to 4 December 2026. The program includes 20 virtual workshops (200 hours total) and will create 26 educational podcasts on accessibility, technology and inclusion.
The State of Pernambuco's Education Secretariat announced 4,200 free in‑person Libras courses beginning 3 August, covering four proficiency levels and specialised tracks for translators, interpreters and instructors. Each track consists of four five‑month modules with weekly classes.
In Rio das Ostras, the municipal education department inaugurated a Basic Libras and Bilingual Education for Deaf course on 28 July. The 180‑hour, face‑to‑face program targets teachers, special‑education staff and support personnel, aiming to embed bilingual teaching practices in municipal schools.
