Brazil: Legal developments for Jair Bolsonaro and Filipe Martins
Supreme Federal Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes has authorized a laboratory professional to conduct a blood collection at the residence of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The procedure, to be performed by Sabin Laboratory, is scheduled for Monday, September 21, as Bolsonaro is currently serving humanitarian house arrest. Bolsonaro is serving a sentence of 27 years and three months for attempted coup d'état.
Separately, former presidential aide Filipe Martins is facing severe restrictions while in judicial custody at the Casa de Custódia Hildebrando de Souza in Paraná. His defense claims the current environment constitutes psychological torture due to isolation and the inability to perform work or academic activities to reduce his sentence. Martins, who has been in custody for over 440 days, maintains a disciplined routine of exercise and religious study while awaiting a regime progression scheduled for 2031.
