Brazil maintains free interstate bus travel for low-income elderly

In Brazil, individuals aged 60 and older with a monthly income of up to R$ 3,242.00 are entitled to free interstate bus travel. This benefit, anchored in the Statute of the Elderly, requires bus companies to reserve specific seats for beneficiaries on routes connecting different states.

Under current regulations, transport companies must provide two free seats per vehicle. If these seats are already occupied, companies are required to offer a minimum 50% discount on the ticket price for other eligible travelers. To claim the benefit, passengers must present proof of income, such as an INSS statement or the Elderly Person's Card, at the time of purchase.
