Brazil Ministry of Agriculture confirms second Newcastle disease focus in Santa Catarina

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) has confirmed a second focus of Newcastle disease at a poultry establishment in Coronel Freitas, Santa Catarina. This new occurrence was identified within the restriction area previously established following the first case recorded in Nova Itaberaba.

Official veterinary services have initiated emergency zoosanitary protocols, including epidemiological investigations, intensive surveillance, and containment measures. The sanitary depopulation of birds at the affected property has already begun. Due to the proximity of the two sites, authorities have made minor adjustments to the restriction perimeter, which remains under strict monitoring.

Additionally, the virus (paramyxovirus avian type 1) was detected in free-living pigeons in the municipality of Marema. However, according to the Ministry and World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) definitions, the detection in pigeons does not constitute a Newcastle disease focus as it occurred outside the sanitary emergency area.

Sanitary defense teams have inspected numerous commercial farms in the region. While some properties tested negative and were cleared to continue production, authorities continue to advise producers to reinforce biosecurity measures, such as using protective screens and disinfecting equipment and vehicles.
