Brazil Newcastle disease outbreak and trade impact

Overview

A Newcastle disease outbreak was confirmed at a commercial turkey farm in Nova Itaberaba, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The infection was identified through active epidemiological surveillance, leading to the sanitary elimination of approximately 6,500 turkeys and the disinfection of facilities. The Brazilian government declared a 60-day zoosanitary emergency in several municipalities, including Nova Itaberaba, Águas Frias, Coronel Freitas, and Nova Erechim.

Sanitary response efforts have mobilized 28 teams to conduct surveillance across 1,680 rural properties within a ten-kilometer radius of the initial focus. To date, 352 properties have been inspected, comprising 256 subsistence farms and 96 commercial establishments.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) has since confirmed a second focus of the disease at a poultry establishment in Coronel Freitas, located within the previously established restriction area. In response, authorities have initiated emergency protocols, including the sanitary depopulation of birds at the new site and adjustments to the restriction perimeter. While the virus was detected in free-living pigeons in Marema, officials noted this does not constitute a Newcastle disease focus as it occurred outside the sanitary emergency area.

The outbreak triggered significant international trade restrictions. Mexico and Malaysia suspended all imports of Brazilian poultry products. China, Chile, and Saudi Arabia have implemented targeted restrictions specifically on products originating from Santa Catarina. In Argentina, SENASA is applying a zoning strategy to allow movement from zones confirmed to be free of the disease. Brazilian authorities emphasize that poultry products subject to official inspection remain safe for human consumption.
