Brazil authorizes 24 new federal institute campuses across 12 states
On 6 July, Brazil’s Ministry of Education issued Portaria № 591/2026, authorising the operation of 24 new campuses of the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology (IFs) in 12 states. The expansion raises the federal network to 754 units. New campuses include Carapicuíba and São Bernardo do Campo (IF São Paulo) and sites in Amazonas (Manicoré, Santo Antônio do Içá), Bahia (Itabuna), Goiás (Cavalcante), Ceará (Fortaleza – São Gerardo), Minas Gerais (São João Nepomuceno), Pará (Alenquer, Barcarena, Redenção, Tailândia, Viseu), Pernambuco (Águas Belas, Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, Araripina), Paraná (Araucária), Rio de Janeiro (Magé), Rio Grande do Sul (Caçapava do Sul, Gramado, Rosário do Sul, Triunfo), and Santa Catarina (Campos Novos, Mafra). The campuses fall into two typologies: 18 facilities for up to 1,400 students each (70 teachers and 45 administrative staff) and six smaller sites for up to 800 students (40 teachers and 26 staff). The Itabuna campus (IF Bahia) will begin provisional operations in the second half of 2024, offering integrated secondary‑technical courses, with regular programmes slated for 2027. Funding will come from federal budget allocations, service revenues and agreements, and the new institutions will be linked to the Ministry of Education.
