Brazil 2026 education reforms – expansion & labour dispute

Overview

The 2026 reforms continue to widen cultural and inclusive education while scaling higher‑education infrastructure. Following the Supreme Court’s temporary‑teacher salary floor, Bahia and Mato Grosso do Sul raised pay and hiring. Civic‑military schools, the Arte e Cultura na Educação Integral programme, Escola Sonora concerts, Arte Jovem+ choirs, Curta Educação cinema screenings and the Circuito Cine Curtajá accessible‑film programme have deepened creative learning. Grants supported quilombola nutrition projects and municipal law in Campinas (MG) recognized a quilombola school. Governors and mayors convened technical tables for school construction, creche expansion, transport fleets and pedagogical programmes; Tangará da Serra’s Unemat campus received over R$ 18 million for modernisation. Integrated State Schools opened in Cuiabá (1 July) and new Federal Institute campuses were authorised (6 July). The Flutists of Marambaia project now runs classes at the UNESCO‑listed Sítio Roberto Burle Marx, reaching 1,200+ children; UNESCO has highlighted it as an Ocean Decade action. In the first half of 2026 the Cuiabá Municipal Education Department upgraded all 172 public schools, completing 34 structural works, approving 72 fire‑prevention projects, issuing 110+ sanitary permits and adding climate‑control, lighting and energy‑efficiency upgrades, while expanding early‑childhood capacity.
