Brazil moves forward with battery‑recycling policy and sustainable procurement bill

The Brazilian Senate’s Environment Committee approved in a first round a substitute text to create a National Battery Circularity Policy. The draft, reported by Senator Confúcio Moura and authored by Senator Jaques Wagner, requires manufacturers, importers and distributors of electric‑vehicle batteries to establish reverse‑logistics plans and to provide collection points, linking compliance to environmental licensing.

In the state of Bahia, legislators introduced a bill that would give state procurement a preference for sustainable materials such as recyclable or biodegradable cups and paper. The proposal allows a price premium of up to 10 % for certified eco‑friendly products and calls for technical criteria and monitoring to ensure compliance.

Both measures aim to strengthen Brazil’s circular‑economy agenda, reduce waste, and support the transition to cleaner transport and reduced environmental impact.
