Brazil's hydropower operators prepare for severe El Niño floods

Brazil's electricity system, which depends on hydropower for roughly two‑thirds of its generation, has prompted the country's largest dam operators, China Three Gorges (CTG) and Engie, to accelerate preparedness. Both firms are conducting spillway tests, engaging riverside communities, and have begun risk‑management protocols in June—earlier than the usual September schedule—to ensure safe dam operation during the expected rains.
CTG also performed preventive spillway opening tests at the Capivara, Taquaruçu and Rosana hydro plants on 27‑28 July, with discharge rates up to about 4 270 m³/s, confirming equipment readiness before the peak rainy season. Authorities and power generators remain on high alert as the El Niño approaches.
