Brazil moves to compensate accident victims and ease vehicle tax

The Brazilian Senate’s Social Affairs Commission approved a bill that would create specific compensation for victims of scalp‑loss accidents caused by motor‑boat propellers. The proposal, OPL 3.359/2024, sets minimum reimbursement limits for medical expenses (at least R$ 2,700) and for death or permanent disability (at least R$ 13,500), and will be reviewed by the National Private Insurance Council.

Separately, the Chamber of Deputies’ Transport Committee approved a draft law that would lower the annual vehicle‑ownership tax (IPVA) for cars classified as “recoverable” after serious collisions. The tax reduction would be proportional to the market‑value depreciation proven after repairs, aiming to align the tax with the vehicle’s actual worth. Both measures still require further committee review and final approval before becoming law.
