Brazil municipalities launch rabies vaccination and pet welfare campaigns

Various municipalities across Brazil are conducting extensive rabies vaccination campaigns for dogs and cats to prevent zoonotic transmission. In Goiânia, the campaign includes over 300 vaccination points, including fixed and itinerant locations, targeting animals from three months of age. Similarly, Cruzeiro do Sul has established a fixed vaccination point at the Complexo Esportivo to increase coverage, while Gurupi is prioritizing rural areas to create a protective belt before its urban mobilization.

In addition to vaccination, several regions are implementing animal welfare and population control programs. The CastraPet Paraná program provides free sterilization, vaccination, and microchipping for low-income populations to prevent diseases and reduce animal abandonment. Other local initiatives include mobile sterilization units (Castramóvel) in Vinhedo and João Monlevade, and the launch of digital platforms like TaubaPET to facilitate responsible pet adoption and access to municipal animal services.

Health authorities emphasize that while canine rabies is largely controlled, the virus continues to circulate in wild cycles, particularly among bats. Consequently, annual vaccination remains a critical public health measure for both animal and human safety.
