Brazil public health and animal welfare service upgrades

Overview

In late July 2026, the municipal health secretariat of Campo Grande, alongside Brazil’s Ministry of Health, launched a mobile diagnostic imaging unit at the Esplanada Ferroviária. The unit, scheduled to remain at that location until 24 August, aims to perform approximately 1,300 CT scans and various ultrasounds for patients on the national SUS regulation queue. Appointments are managed via SISREG, with no walk-in admissions allowed. By 29 July, the unit was fully operational, with manager Daniel Saito reporting a daily target of 60 ultrasounds and 60 CT scans. Parallel to these imaging efforts, Campo Grande initiated a pilot for the e-SUS Regulação system. Following a three-day training session for roughly 120 professionals from 64 municipalities, the platform aims to integrate requests for consultations and specialized procedures to increase wait-list transparency, gradually replacing the legacy SISREG system. In Cuiabá, Hospital Santa Rosa performed a pioneering cardiac procedure using the Makoto high-precision system, led by cardiologists Dr Leandro C. Mandaloufas and Dr Nelson Artur dos Reis, to improve coronary artery assessment in a state with approximately 6,000 annual cardiovascular deaths. Animal welfare and zoonosis prevention efforts have expanded significantly. Following the launch of a mobile veterinary clinic by the Superintendência de Bem-Estar Animal (SUBEA) in August, rabies vaccination campaigns have intensified. In Paraíba, the State Health Department (SES-PB) launched a ‘Dia D’ mobilization across 223 municipalities, aiming to immunize over 820,000 animals. By late August, campaigns were active in Salvador, with mobile units in Cajazeiras and Cabula/Beiru, and in Cruzeiro do Sul, targeting 18,000 animals. In Rio Branco, authorities have implemented door-to-door strategies. By early September, vaccination efforts continued in Petrolina, Pernambuco, targeting rural communities through 11 September. By early September, vaccination efforts expanded further.
