Brazil negotiates with United States to avert 25% tariff on exports

The Brazilian government is evaluating commercial concessions and holding talks with the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to try to prevent a 25 % tariff that could be imposed on a range of Brazilian products under Section 301 of US trade law. The deadline for the decision is set for 15 July, and the outcome remains uncertain.

Brazil aims to keep negotiations limited to trade issues, offering concessions on items such as ethanol, sugar quotas and seeking tariff exclusions for sectors that do not directly compete with US producers, for example certain fish products. At the same time, Brazil faces a separate 12.5 % duty linked to alleged forced‑labour practices, which could combine with the 25 % rate to reach up to 37.5 % on some goods.

The US investigation also cites concerns about digital trade, intellectual‑property rights and alleged deforestation, but Brazil rejects politicising the discussion, focusing instead on technical, product‑by‑product arguments to preserve the flow of its agricultural and energy exports.
