Brazil oil workers' union calls for Petrobras re‑nationalization

Around 400 members of the Federation Única dos Petroleiros (FUP) gathered in Salvador for the 20th National Congress. The meeting elected Cibele Vieira as the first woman to coordinate the union since its founding 32 years ago.

Delegates approved a program demanding the re‑nationalization of Petrobras' strategic units – refineries, distribution and other assets privatized under the Temer and Bolsonaro governments – and called for stronger fertilizer and biodiesel sectors, a state‑led just energy transition, and sovereign development of new offshore fields such as the Marginal Equatorial and Pelotas Basin. The proposals will be forwarded to Petrobras management and incorporated into President Lula’s election platform.

Union demonstrators marched to the Mataripe refinery and the Taquipe field, denouncing past privatizations for job losses, higher fuel prices and social inequality. The congress also honored former coordinator Deyvid Bacelar for his long‑term leadership in defending national energy sovereignty.
