Brazil oil workers union leadership shift
Entities: Brazil · Deyvid Bacelar · Federation Única dos Petroleiros (FUP) · Petrobras · Cibele Vieira
Overview
In late July 2026 the Federação Única dos Petroleiros (FUP) held its 20th National Congress in Salvador, Brazil. Delegates elected Cibele Vieira, a Petrobras veteran, as the federation’s first female coordinator‑general for the 2026‑2029 term.
Following her election, the congress adopted a program urging the re‑nationalization of Petrobras’s strategic assets that had been privatized under previous governments. The union called for a state‑led energy transition, expansion of fertilizer and biodiesel production, and development of new offshore fields. Demonstrators marched to a refinery and an offshore field, linking past privatizations to job losses and higher fuel prices. The proposals are to be presented to Petrobras management and incorporated into President Lula’s policy agenda.
