Brazil: Pix users advised on fraud recovery and error protocols

In response to various Pix-related incidents, guidance has been issued regarding the use of the Special Refund Mechanism (MED) and the handling of accidental transfers. For fraud victims, the Central Bank of Brazil allows requests for the MED through the user's banking institution within up to 80 days of the transaction. While the mechanism can block funds in receiving accounts and track subsequent transfers, it does not guarantee full recovery, as success depends on available balances and fraud confirmation.

In cases of accidental transfers to the wrong recipient, the MED is not applicable. Instead, users are advised to contact the recipient directly to request a voluntary return. The Pix system includes a specific function that allows recipients to return either the full or partial amount of a received transfer.

Recent criminal activity highlights the risks of social engineering. In Nova Mutum, a business owner reported losing R$ 3.1 thousand to scammers posing as bank managers via WhatsApp. The perpetrators used detailed company information and video calls to build trust, eventually instructing the victim to perform a Pix transfer under the guise of validating new service tariffs.
