Rio de Janeiro gang feud erupts on Copacabana beach and Andaraí neighborhood

On 25 June 2026 a violent clash between Rio de Janeiro’s two biggest criminal factions, Comando Vermelho (CV) and Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP), broke an informal truce on the Copacabana and Leme waterfront. Video from a local shop shows a man fleeing into the premises, being assaulted, a gun being brandished and other by‑standers chased. Merchants say the gangs now threaten delivery workers, demand security fees from kiosk owners and restrict movement along the promenade.

A few days later the same rivalry spilled into the Andaraí district of the city’s North Zone. A shoot‑out between CV and TCP members left 56‑year‑old Maria Solange Ribeiro de Oliveira wounded by a stray bullet near a supermarket; she was taken to Hospital Federal do Andaraí and released after treatment. Police increased patrols but reported no direct confrontation with officers. The incidents highlight an escalation of gang‑related violence that threatens tourism, local commerce and public safety along Rio’s iconic beaches and residential neighborhoods.
