Comando Vermelho crackdown expands to arms and finance
Overview
Brazil’s multi‑state offensive against the Comando Vermelho (CV) continued through August 2026, deepening both geographic reach and investigative scope. After the May “Território Livre” raid in Ceará and the June joint Brazilian‑Paraguayan captures, police intensified operations in Rio de Janeiro. On 16 April, investigators arrested Gilvan Firmo Margarida (“Nego”), identified as the gang’s largest firearms and drug supplier, after he was stopped on Avenida Brasil in Bangu while using a false identity. A separate April arrest in Itaguaí seized Gilbert Wagner Antunes Lopes (“Waguinho Batman”), accused of ordering a 2021 councilor killing and of militia formation.
In July, Gaeco’s second phase of Operation Safra Desviada targeted an alleged R$28.7 million agribusiness fraud in Mato Grosso, executing warrants in four Mato Grosso municipalities and two in São Paulo, seizing an aircraft, vehicles and freezing real‑estate and bank assets.
Financial investigations intensified in late July and August. Operation Replay, launched by the Mato Grosso Civil Police, exposed a scheme involving roughly R$32 million moved through luxury real estate, vehicles, and proxies, including a prison‑based financial operator. This operation led to the arrest of a senior financier’s wife at Cuiabá’s airport, accused of laundering over R$15 million. On 4 August, Rio’s Civil Police and the Public Ministry launched Operation Quimera, dismantling a CV money‑laundering network that moved roughly R$11 million through the Várzea Country Club and the Pousada Menino do Rio. This followed reports of the gang demanding monthly payments to prevent clubs from being seized.
In Porto Velho, police arrested three suspected CV members during a narcotics operation, seizing 35kg of drugs and rifle ammunition. International cooperation remains a factor, highlighted by Suriname’s extradition of two CV suspects under Operation Red Fox.
