Brazil police investigate death linked to online gambling debts

Authorities in Novo Hamburgo, Brazil, are investigating the death of a 43-year-old woman who was reportedly facing threats from loan sharks due to debts incurred through the ‘Jogo do Tigrinho’ online gambling platform. The victim was found dead in her home on Wednesday, and police have opened an inquiry to determine if the threats received by her and her family are linked to her death, or if there was any involvement of inducement or instigation.

In a related account of the impact of online betting, a 41-year-old woman disclosed that she lost R$ 1.7 million to online casinos. She reported that the addiction led to the loss of her job, her marriage, and resulted in R$ 900,000 in bank debt. She stated that she began betting in 2022 as an escape from personal and professional pressures, viewing it as a way to earn money without working.
