Brazil police seize 22 wild birds in Gama and 50 in Lagarto in illegal captivity raids

In the Federal District's Gama district, the Military Police Environmental Battalion conducted a routine patrol on July 4, 2026 and found 22 wild birds kept illegally in nine homes. The seizure included a variety of species, 20 cages and two trap devices. The owners were each issued a police report and will face charges under Brazil's environmental crime law. The birds and equipment were transferred to the CEAPA and will be sent to the CETAS for veterinary evaluation, rehabilitation and possible re‑release.

Separately, the First Division of the Lagarto Regional Police carried out an operation in the Colônia 13 settlement after an anonymous tip. About 50 wild birds, along with cages, traps and capture tools, were confiscated. The state environmental agency (Adema) took custody of the rescued birds. The operation was highlighted by the local delegate as a reminder that illegal capture, holding or trade of wildlife is punishable under environmental legislation, and the public was urged to report such crimes.
