Global crackdown on illegal bird trade

Overview

In early July 2026, Brazil’s environmental police carried out coordinated raids in the Federal District’s Gama district and the Lagarto settlement. Officers seized a total of 72 wild birds—22 in Gama and 50 in Lagarto—along with cages, traps and capture equipment. The birds were handed to state wildlife agencies for veterinary assessment, rehabilitation and possible re‑release, while the owners faced charges under Brazil’s environmental crime law.

Mid‑July, Polish customs officers in Warsaw intercepted a shipment of 20 exotic parrots lacking CITES documentation. The batch comprised 16 rosellas and four Alexandrine parrots; most suffered injuries, and one died during transport. The birds were placed in a central animal shelter pending investigation of wildlife‑trafficking and animal‑cruelty violations, with potential prison sentences of up to five years.

In early August, Czech customs in Brno uncovered an organized smuggling network that imported more than 100 protected parrots into the country. The birds, sedated in cut‑open plastic bottles, were seized across three regions and transferred to the Ostrava Zoo for temporary care. Suspects face up to eight years in prison for trafficking endangered species. These actions illustrate a widening, multinational effort to enforce wildlife protection laws and disrupt illegal bird trade.
