Brazilians split on blame for U.S. 25% tariff – Bolsonaro family vs Lula government
The United States imposed a 25% tariff on Brazilian products beginning on 22 July 2026. An AtlasIntel/Bloomberg poll of 5,021 Brazilian adults conducted between 22 and 27 July asked who was responsible for the measure. Forty‑five point four percent said the Bolsonaro family, while 41.5 % blamed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government; 8.5 % held both equally responsible and 2.5 % said neither was to blame.
Respondents also judged the motive: 43.3 % saw the tariff as politically driven to influence Brazil’s presidential election, 39.6 % as economically motivated to protect U.S. interests, and 10.3 % as intended to bolster Donald Trump. A majority, 59.4 %, considered the tariff unjustified. Regarding possible retaliation, 49.3 % opposed invoking Brazil’s reciprocity law, while 38.5 % supported it.
Despite the trade dispute, 45.6 % believed Lula could negotiate a reduction, whereas 39.7 % were doubtful. The poll’s margin of error was ±1 percentage point with 95 % confidence.
