Brazil-Portugal migration: Voluntary return requests rise 50%

Requests from Brazilians to return to their home country via voluntary return programs in Portugal have increased by more than 50% during the first seven months of 2026, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Data shows that 470 people applied for the program through July, surpassing the total of 432 registrations recorded for the entire year of 2024. The monthly average of requests rose from 44 in 2025 to 67 in the current year. While the program serves immigrants from various nations, including Venezuela, Sri Lanka, and Mozambique, Brazilians represent 80% of the total return requests, despite making up only 30% of the immigrant population in Portugal.

The program provides assistance to those in socioeconomic vulnerability, regardless of their migratory status, covering airfare and a small travel allowance. Reported motivations for returning include difficulties securing employment, issues with documentation for irregular migrants, and the high cost of living and housing for those with legal residency.
