Brazilian migration trends in Portugal
Overview
The Brazilian community in Portugal remains the country’s largest foreign group, with registered nationals approaching 500,000. According to the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), Brazilians account for approximately 31.1% of all foreign residents in Portugal, a figure that has grown by nearly 10,000 people compared to the previous year.
Despite this large presence, there has been a significant rise in voluntary return requests. Data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) indicates that requests from Brazilians to return to their home country via voluntary programs increased by more than 50% during the first seven months of 2026. Brazilians represent 80% of these requests, even though they constitute only 30% of the immigrant population. Reported reasons for returning include the high cost of living and housing, difficulties securing employment, and documentation issues for irregular migrants.
