Brazil poultry exports face restrictions after Newcastle disease outbreak

A Newcastle disease outbreak at a commercial turkey farm in Nova Itaberaba, Santa Catarina, has triggered international trade restrictions on Brazilian poultry. The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) confirmed the virus presence, leading to the culling of approximately 6,500 turkeys and the declaration of a 60-day zoosanitary emergency in the municipalities of Nova Itaberaba, Águas Frias, Coronel Freitas, and Nova Erechim.

International responses vary by scope. Malaysia and Mexico have suspended poultry imports from all of Brazil. Conversely, China, Chile, and Saudi Arabia have implemented targeted restrictions affecting only products originating from the state of Santa Catarina. Argentina has also suspended imports specifically from the delimited affected zone, utilizing a zonification mechanism to allow trade from other Brazilian regions to continue.

Authorities have completed the sanitary depopulation of the affected site and are proceeding with facility disinfection. To prevent further spread, 15 field teams are monitoring approximately 1,680 properties in the region. While the disease is highly contagious among birds, officials emphasize that consuming poultry products that have undergone official sanitary inspection remains safe for humans.
