Brazil launches 20‑valent Pneumo vaccine for children

Brazil's Ministry of Health began a national rollout of the 20‑valent pneumococcal vaccine (Pneumo 20) on Saturday, June 20, in São Paulo's Zona Sul. Health Minister Alexandre Padilha led the launch, which targets children under five who have not completed the previous schedule. The new immuniser protects against 20 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae, expanding coverage for pneumonia, meningitis and otitis media and replacing the earlier 10‑valent product.

The program aims to vaccinate around 2 million children nationwide, with the SUS having secured more than 8 million doses and already distributing over 570 000 doses to states, planning over 6 million by year‑end. In addition to children, the vaccine will be offered to institutionalised elderly, indigenous people over five, and individuals with chronic pulmonary conditions. Health officials expect the expanded protection to lower hospitalisations, deaths and associated health‑system costs. WHO data cite pneumococcal disease as the leading preventable cause of child mortality; Brazil recorded 4.6 k meningitis cases and 1.4 k deaths between 2023‑2025, a case‑fatality rate above 30 %.

State health authorities, such as Sergipe, have begun a gradual incorporation of Pneumo 20 into their public‑health vaccination schedules, reinforcing the nationwide effort.
