Brazil President Lula attacks privatizations and betting influence

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said the recent privatizations of BR Distribuidora, Liquigás and Eletrobras (now Axia Energia) have not delivered benefits for ordinary Brazilians. He questioned why the sale of the fuel‑distribution arm of Petrobras and the former state gas company resulted in higher prices for consumers, and asked for an explanation of any gains to the country. Lula noted that Petrobras remains bound by a contract that limits competition with the former BR Distribuidora until 2029 and hinted that the government could consider restoring a state role in fuel distribution.

Lula also warned that online gambling and betting firms are increasingly dominating football, advertising and fostering corruption. He called on the Central Bank to force these companies to pay taxes, describing the spread of "bets" as a threat to public integrity and a burden on the population.
