Brazil President Lula launches fourth‑term election campaign
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, officially launched his campaign for a fourth term at the Workers' Party (PT) national convention in São Paulo on 2‑3 August 2026. He said a victory in the October election would be his final term.
Lula pledged to increase defence spending, protect Brazil’s reserves of rare‑earths and other strategic minerals, and warned that China, the United States and France would not be allowed to exploit those resources without respecting Brazil’s sovereignty. He criticised foreign interference, noting two rounds of U.S. tariffs on Brazilian goods imposed in July 2026.
His platform includes an income‑tax reform aimed at lowering the burden on low‑income earners and a debt‑forgiveness programme. Lula was formally nominated by the PT and will run with Vice President Geraldo Alckmin as his running mate. His main rival is Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who enjoys support from Donald Trump and other right‑wing leaders.
