Lula launches bid, vows defence boost and mineral sovereignty
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, formally launched his campaign for a fourth and final term at the Workers’ Party (PT) convention in São Paulo on 2 August 2026. He announced a ticket with Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and said he is in “great shape” despite his age. Lula pledged to increase defence spending, strengthen Brazil’s defence industry and protect the country’s rare‑earth and other strategic mineral reserves, warning that “no Chinese, no American, no French will touch these resources without respecting Brazil’s sovereignty.” He also said Brazil must be prepared so that no one can invade the country. The president criticised recent U.S. actions, noting that Washington imposed two rounds of 25 % tariffs on Brazilian exports in July 2026 and accused the Trump administration of trying to interfere in Brazil’s elections. His main rival is Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who enjoys support from Donald Trump. Polls show Lula leading the race, with about 48 % support versus roughly 43 % for Bolsonaro. The campaign also highlights proposed income‑tax reforms to ease the burden on low‑income earners and a debt‑forgiveness programme.
