Brazil President Lula Rejects ‘Leftist’ Label at G7

At a G7 meeting in France, Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva told IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that he has never been a leftist, describing his political roots as tied to trade‑union activism rather than a rigid ideology. He added that the world is “center‑oriented,” not “left‑oriented,” and defended Brazil’s electronic voting system, suggesting it could be adopted elsewhere.

Separately, former U.S. President Donald Trump, in a press interview, said Brazil is a “politically difficult” and “dangerously political” country, claiming he had spoken with Lula at the summit. Trump’s remarks also confused the Bolsonaro brothers, linking them to legal cases, while Lula responded that Trump should not interfere in Brazil’s elections.
