Brazil President Lula urges stricter digital platform regulation after STF ruling

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva told the G7 summit in Évian‑les‑Bains, France, that regulating online platforms is "central to protecting fundamental rights" and warned that artificial intelligence could widen social inequalities if left unchecked. He emphasized that big‑tech firms hold economic power comparable to large economies and called for governance that safeguards data generated by Brazilian citizens.

At the same time, Brazil’s Supreme Court completed a landmark judgment on the Marco Civil da Internet, declaring article 19 partially unconstitutional. The decision allows platforms to be held civilly liable for third‑party content in certain cases even without a prior court order, opening a new agenda for digital governance and prompting the court to urge Congress to legislate on the issue. The ruling and Lula’s statements together signal a push for a comprehensive Brazilian policy on the digital environment, artificial intelligence, and data sovereignty.
